Properly Subversive
Let’s start the new year off by highlighting what will undoubtedly be the No. 1 story of 2024: The rematch between Donald J. Trump and Joe Biden.
It’s going to have all the decorum of a cheesy wrestling promotion. In one corner we’ll have the world’s undisputed champion of taunts and stupid one-liners versus the mumblin’, stumblin’ king of creep.
This will be our choice for president, unless one goes to jail or the other trips and dies trying to climb into the ring. All we can do is embrace it – curse the two national political parties every now and then for giving us this choice – and trust that the great experiment that is America survives and thrives no matter which way it goes.
I think America will survive and thrive, but, you know, it’s going to be one wild test. Buckle up.
DEMOCRACY?
The latest bit of nonsense employed by the Democratic establishment is to prevent Trump from getting on the ballot. It’s happened in Colorado and Maine. The theory is that Trump can’t be on the ballot because he incited an insurrection on Jan. 6, 2020.
President Biden, of course, likes the idea as do a number of spineless national Democrats. It’s not going to work because no one has charged Trump with insurrection, let alone convicted him of it.
So, there is zero doubt the strategy will fail in judicial review. Top Democrats who embrace the strategy make the party look anti-democratic and allow Trump to give Biden the “Peoples Elbow” (if you know your wrestling moves).
I like the way the New York Times put it: “Misgivings (about keeping Trump off the ballot) reflect deep divisions and unease among elected officials, democracy experts and voters over how to handle Mr. Trump’s campaign to reclaim the presidency four years after he went to extraordinary lengths in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election. While some … think it best that voters settle the matter, others say that Mr. Trump’s efforts require accountability and should be legally disqualifying.”
And there you have the crazy bottom line for some Democrats: To preserve democracy we must limit democracy.
What did I tell you? It’s going to be a wild 2024.
ONE MORE THING
– Some people are solving major world problems and I’m over here all excited because I found my missing sock inside my underwear.
See you next week. Until then, avoid soreheads, laugh a little and always remember to question authority.
