- The Mineral County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on Nov. 20 to offer Stewart Handte the position of Sheriff.

- A model of a QH-50C Dash, a small drone helicopter, was donated to Hawthorne Ordnance Museum by Peter Papadokos of Reno. The model is only one of two in existence. One is located in a military facility in the United States and the other is in Hawthorne, Papadokos told the director. The QH-50C was in service during the Vietnam War until its retirement in the 1980’s.
- Employees of Day Zimmermann Hawthorne Corporation helped the Hawthorne Care and Share serve Thanksgiving Dinner to seniors. Serving were: Cletiz Brantley, Ben Roberts, Jimmie Brown, John George, Teresa McNally, Suzanne Lahre, Karen Knight, Gina Buum and Paul Trujillo.

- The Western Nevada Dirt Track Racing association held their annual awards banquet where many trophies were presented. Among Point Champions, Winners were Frank Barrett, Jason Dye, Malen Gonzales and Larry Wright.
- Pete Summerbell of Hawthorne defeated Butch Sheehan of Reno for the Sierra Nevada Professional Golf Association Match Play championship in the finals played on the North Ridge course in Reno.
- The following Mineral County High School students were selected for for all-conference football, First team, Sergio Olmedo, James Ferrell, Second team: Bryan Sample, Darren Hamrey, and James Ferrell, Honorable Mention, Rick Townsend, Todd Snider, Lew Lockwood.

- A meeting to discuss the possible abandonment of the Hazen-Mina branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad was to be held in Reno. Southern Pacific officials stressed the problem of maintaining the lines in view of declining use.
- In an effort to coordinate various recreation programs, were to select a recreation director for Mineral County.
- Dave Menesini of Yerington won the special prize of $100 cash for bringing in the first fish over five pounds. Mesesini was trolling at the Cliffs and caught the 5lb Cutthroat.
- Several burglaries and attempted burglaries were reported to the sheriff’s office which included thefts at businesses in the Babbitt area.

- For the second year in a row, big Jim Smith, a captain from the Naval Ammunition Depot Fire Department in Hawthorne, won the Burro Flapjack Contest at Death Valley 49ers Encampment at Death Valley National Monument. Big Jim won $100 first prize and a brand new Stetson Hat.
- The Mineral County High School wrestling team planned to attend a tournament In Yerington according to head coach Joe Pedrojetti. Topping the list of 30 candidates on the team were nine returning lettermen; Don Davis, Joe Johnson, Mike Kunzi, Joe Popken, Mooochie Griffin, Ruby Gonzales, Pat Thyne, and Curtis Beverly.
- Katherine McKenna retired as Hawthorne Postmaster.

- More than$40,000 (equivalent in 2013 about $305.000) had been approved for a retraining course for 106 unemployed workers in Mineral County, it was announced by Nevada senators Alan Bible and Howard Cannon. The senators said the workers would be trained as sewing machines operators during a four-week course to be offered at the Rockingham Sleepwear plant located at NAD Hawthorne.
- Uncle Vane Day recalled that, “In the Assembly Chambers at Carson City hangs an oil painting of Abraham Lincoln, a work of art done by Chas. M. She is from New York. It is regarded as one of the best Lincoln portraits. IRS presence testifies to the great affection of the people of Nevada for the character and memory of Abraham Lincoln; and recalls (in words of the legislature) that “Both the Territory and the State of Nevada were established during the administration of President Lincoln, and the acts of the immoral martyred president, in advocating and proclaiming Statehood for Nevada, are a part of the illustration history of the commonwealth.”

- The United States Civil Service Commission announced an examination to fill the position of postmaster at Schurz. Annual salary for the position was $2,494 (equivalent in 2013 to about $23,000).
- Coach Winton King announced the varsity baseball squad: Wayne Cable, John Crandall, James Dike, Floyd Justus, Roy Kidder, Eddie Robinson, Bill Viani, John Thompson, Tom East, Charles Huggins, James Foster and Bob Wellet.
- Nelson-Wagner hardware was burglarized for the second time in a space of a few weeks.
- Congressman Cliff Young was a visitor to Hawthorne.

- Seven Mineral County registrants left Hawthorne to enter the military service. Local registrants leaving from Hawthorne were: Everet Predmore, Roy Quartz, Elvin Williams, Alvin M. Smark, Paul Flynn, Rubert Tudor, Bert Armstrong, and James O. Parker entered West Point.
- Mineral County High School Serpents defeated the Stewart Indians 30-0 in a Saturday afternoon game played in Hawthorne. The game closed a successful first season with a record of 3-2-1.

- The Nevada Public Service Commission joined Mineral, Nye, and Esmeralda residents in protesting Southern Pacific’s intention to abandon the narrow gauge rail line from Mina to Tom in Mono County, California.
- The Independent-News urged the Public Works Administration to consider construction of a new high school in Hawthorne as a major PWA project. Some residents expressed belief that a new elementary school was needed, while others suggested combining efforts to support a faculty to serve both schools, even though it might require some changes in the laws because two separate school districts would be involved.
- The Federal government’s newest relief agency was announced under the name of Civil work administration to provide employment for 3,000 workers in Nevada, 64. In Mineral County. It was stressed that the CWA would separate from any other relief agency that had been created, and would hire men with dependents, capable of doing a day’s work. Right away, some residents asked if it would be the men or dependents that were capable of doing a good day’s work.
