The Serpent Classic basketball tournament rolled into Hawthorne last week as 17 high school teams competed over a three day span. The annual tournament is made up of both boys and girls teams and takes place at the high school and junior high gyms.
The local teams fared well for the most part as the Serpent boys finished with three wins and the girls picked up a win on the final day.
After falling to 3A Fernley to open the season the week before, the Mineral County boys kicked off the tournament with a 63-51 win over Sparks on Thursday. They then came back the next day and won a pair of games over Beatty 51-16 and Pershing County. The win over the Lovelock squad came down to the wire as the Serpents outlasted the Mustangs 71-69.
Day three wasn’t as kind to the home team as the boys fell 61-45 to Battle Mountain and 62-49 to Bishop Union.
The Serpents finished the tournament with three wins and are now 3-3 on the young season. The next time they will take the court is Dec. 15 against Owyhee at home.
The Serpent girls struggled early in the tournament and lost its first three games, before pulling out a late win against Beatty on the final day. They sit at 1-3 on the season and also host Owyhee on Dec. 15.
