- In a series of 3-1 votes the Mineral County School Board voted to raise the salaries of most of the employees in the school district by 4.7 percent.
- An active thunderstorm passed over Hawthorne on Aug. 21 generating about 175 lightning strikes in about 6 hours.

- First day of school counts in Mineral County were; Hawthorne Elementary 248, Hawthorne Primary 167, and Schurz Elementary 81. No totals were given for the high school . New teachers were Kimberly Dement, Darren Hamrey, Paul Swenson, and Stephanie Wilson at the high school, Deborah Griffin and Daniel Womack at the elementary and junior high and Stacie Madrid and Sandy Swenson at the primary.
- Shelia Hoferer and Tyler Viani announced their engagement and marriage.
- Kenny Little of Hawthorne represented his hometown at the 2003 Devil Pups campent at the Marine Corps Base Camp at Pendleton, Ca. Little was numbed two on the physical fitness test. In 2004 he was eligible to serve as a drill instructor assistant at the camp.

- Total enrollment for the first day of the 1993 school year was 1,124, eight less than the previous year.
- The 30th Annual President cup golf tournament was played at the Walker Lake Golf Course and proved to be the latest in the history of the event. Seventeen four-man teams competed for the cup.

- A Mina woman and an escapee from a prison in the state of Washington were arrested following the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old Mina man in a vacant lot one block b west of Highway 95 near Douglas and 11th Street. Another Mina Woman and a man from Carson City were being held in Mineral County jail on charges of armed robbery, vehicle theft and attempted murder following an incident that occurred near Hawthorne.
- Four families living in Hawthorne Army Ammunition Plant housing areas were awarded for their landscaping efforts with Yard of the Month signs. Gordon and Glenn’s King, Art and Mary Tolley, Paul and Pauline Archambault and Calvin and Margaret Taylor all received recognition for their landscaping efforts in the housing areas of Schweer Drive, Connelly, public quarters and Babbitt.

- Teaching staff members for schools in Mineral County were named.
- Planning for reconstruction of U. S. Highway 95 between Tonopah and Goldfield took shape in the form of an extensive environmental impact statement.

- Final touches were being completed on the Air Forces Radar Bomb Scoring installation at Babbitt. The unit assigned here was to consist of four officers and 60 enlisted men. It was estimated the new military service unit would generate approximately $200,000 (about $1.5 million adjusted for inflation in (2013) to the community’s economy.
- A meeting to formally organize a planning commission was held and Jack Bott was named chairman, Neil Kiley was named vice chairman m County Clerk, Martha G. Barlow was chosen to serve as secretary and other members were Mike Mongelli, commissioner representative, Bernard York, County engineer, and businessman Louis Burr, Marvin Wagner and Jack McCloskey.

- Open house was held at the new Bell Telephone office in Hawthorne.
- Brigadier General James A. May, Nevada director of selective Service, called attention to the fact that fatherhood would no longer be grounds for deferment for service in the military.
- The Rockets won the Little League championship for 1953 with 12 wins and 5 losses and a farewell note stated that “it has been heartwarming and worthy of note that l have not heard one Little League use profanity or have they made Scurrilous remarks.

- Contract for a $10,000 street improvement program in Hawthorne was awarded by the county commissioners to the local firm of Miller and Stoutenberg.
- Taxpayers were notified. They must file post income tax and victory tax declarations by September 15.
- The USO Junior Commandos offered membership to any boy or girl who was in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade and reported that the group was having success with grooving watermelons.
- In an advertisement in the newspaper, Sierra Beer was named as “The only beer designed for Nevada climate.”

- Constable E. E. Carlisle announced he was withdrawing his district court to have Sheriff Henry Boerlin removed from office.
- Tom Conelly of Hawthorne was named manager of the reemployment office in Hawthorne and June Baker was appointed clerical assistant. Appointments were made by a state committee consisting of Cecil W. Creel, William Royle, David Ericsson, S.C. Durkee, and Robert Allen. Applications had been made by 42 unemployed men to work on public works projects.
- Ray Parett, superintendent of the U. S. Indian Agency at Schurz and James Penman, representing the Schurz School District Board of Trustees, sought assistance from Mineral County Commissioners and Mineral County High School Board of Trustees for three first year high school students to attend school. High School Trustees said it might be possible to assist with transportation from Schurz to Hawthorne while Parett and Penman said they would consult the state department of education to consider offering courses at Schurz.
