• A 60 mm mortar round exploded in its firing tube during a training exercise involving Marines visiting the Hawthorne Army Depot from Camp Lejeune in South Carolina. Seven Marines were killed in the tragic accident and eight others were injured.

• The CBS special “Everyone has a Story” featured Roger and Evelyn Lovejoy from Mina. They were chosen by producers throwing a dart at a map of the United States. The Lovejoy were chosen via telephone book. A story will be featured in next week’s edition.

• Tim Hall, Max Qualls and Andrew Bowles were awarded Silver Medals for their group science project “ How Hot is your Fire”. Cory Kleidosty won 4th place for his entry “The Naked Egg.”

• Trisha Diede, the daughter of Josh and Cindy Diede, raced in Lovelock in the MX West race and placed fourth out of 26 riders.

• Mrs. Phyllis McGee of Hawthorne, who was serving as a National Executive Committee woman for the American Legion, attended the National Legion Assembly held in Washington, D. C.

• Three members of the Lady Serpents basketball team were named the 1993 All-State Team Junior guard Shawna Hicks was named to the first team. Junior guard Jeri Munden and Sophomore Kari Emm were both elected for state honors.

• Gabbs High School basketball greats who were selected for the Northern Division All-League Team for the 1992-93 seasons were Kacey Birchell, Lee Houston and John Rosenlund.

• Governor Richard Bryant and his wife Bonnie wear special guests at the Mineral County of Commerce awards banquet.

• Another effect to have the federal government transfer property located in the Babbitt Housing area to Mineral County was initiated by US Senator Paul Laxalt and Chic Hecht.

• Schurz boxer John Rain Lockwood entered the 1983 Golden Gloves boxing competition held in Carson City. He entered the 14-15 years old open division. John won both of his bouts and then planned to box in the Junior Olympics in April of that year.

• Sierra Pacific Power Company requested a rate increase to the Nevada Public Service Commission. Company offices said the requested rate increase would amount to ten cents a day ($2.90 a month).

• Instead of purchasing and exchanging valentines the fifth grade students at the Hawthorne Elementary School voted to donate money towards  the coronary unit at Mt. Grant Hospital.

• Officers elected by the Hawthorne-Babbitt Little League were Richard Cordova, Tilden Martin, Robert Thorndike, and Stanley Edwards.

60 Years Ago

• Mrs Dick Sawyer of Hawthorne drove up to the Post Office and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake and smashed a hole in the north wall of the brick building preparing the facility for summer air conditioning.

• The Elks Lodge held their State Convention in Hawthorne.

• The Serpents lost to Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas in overtime game 52-44, but defeated Virginia City in the consolation game 51-49.

70 Years Ago

• An airplane that was stolen at Gerlach was found a few miles east of Schurz by Elton Swindler who was prospecting in the area.

• Three construction workers living in the barracks at the Naval Depot were arrested, hustled off to jail and charged with disturbing the peace following a party on Friday night. Each box the three men were fined $25 by the Justice of the Peace.

• The Serpents survived the opening round at the state basketball tournament by thumping Sparks 85-47, but were eliminated when Reno handed them a 62-34 jolt.

80 Years Ago

• A representative of the U. S. Employment Service was to be stationed in Hawthorne and a special office would be open in Luning from 1:30-5 each afternoon.

• The county commissioners authorized the purchase of a garbage truck with a special body, from the Dennison Machinery Co. in Reno for a cost of $3,350. The commissioners also awarded a contract to a Fallon company to construct a duplex apartment on town property to quarter “old age pensioners” who had been living in tent houses. The bid was $2,560.

• Floyd “Rosy” Hand volunteered to write news of Mineral County High School for the Mineral County Independent-News.

• Assemblyman Howard Malone of Washoe County “retaliated” against Mineral County legislators Senator John Miller and Assemblyman Marshall Hamlin for abolishing a Commissioners district in Mineral County by introducing a bill to o allow Lyon County annex the Cambridge and Sweetwater Districts in western Mineral County Miller and Hamlin, together with Lyon Assemblyman Frank Bugbee and Fred Strosnider, introduced their own measure to give Lyon County the same land area.

• A bill to create a “district “ attorney to sever Mineral,Nye, and Esmeralda counties (same as district judge) was introduced by Senators Miller (Mineral, Marsh (Nye) and Molini (Esmeralda) and passed the senate but was headed for trouble in the assembly before winning final approval.

• A bill to reduce salaries for all elected officials in Mineral County was passed by the State Senate but was expected to be amended in the Assembly before winning final approval.

• County and state crews worked together to remove snow so the Montgomery Pass road Could be opened to travel.
