Serpents Lead 1A-West

The Serpents won both games this weekend and finished the first half of conference play at 7-0. The first win was Friday night as the boys overpowered Smith Valley, 78-46. After a slow start, 13-11, the Serpents ran past the Bulldogs 26-10 in the second quarter to take a halftime lead, 39-21. The third and fourth quarters were all Serpents as they coasted to the win. Robert McFalls had a big night with 33 points. Andre Davis added 18 points; Taylen Wachsmuth finished with eight and took care of the boards. Tony Dominguez had seven points. On Saturday, Virginia City brought a 4-0 record to the Serpents home floor where defense rules. The Serpents beat the Muckers 65-31 holding them to 19 points over the last three quarters. Offensively, the boys had their worst game with 21 turnovers, early foul trouble, but with the good defense they got their running game going which was too much for Virginia City. Wachsmuth led the scoring with 17 points and 13 rebounds for another double-double. McFalls had 15 points, seven steals, seven assists and five rebounds. Davis had 13 points and four steals. Vic Montoya finished with eight points, Dominguez had seven rebounds, three assists and four steals. Serpents Win Pair of League Contests

The Mineral County High boys basketball team coasted to wins over the weekend. On Friday, the Serpents traveled to Carson City to play Sierra Lutheran. The Mineral County boys led 49-29 at the end of the third period and cruised to a 65-46 victory. Andre Davis was the high scorer with 16 points. Taylen Wachsmuth had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Robert McFalls added 12 points, three assists and four blocked shots. Vic Montoya and Devon Davis had six points each. On Saturday, the Serpents hosted the Coleville Wolves. The Serpents ran off to a 46-9 lead at halftime. Everyone scored as the home team won 70-28. McFalls was the games leading scorer with 15 points, Davis had 11, Montoya 10, followed by Wachsmuth and Austin Tweedy with seven points each. The Serpents will travel to Whittell on Friday as both teams are 3-0 in conference play. On Saturday, Pyramid Lake will be in town. Serpents Win Two at Bishop Tourney; JV Team Wins Title

Both the junior varsity and varsity boys basketball teams traveled to Bishop for the three-day holiday tournament last week. The junior varsity boys went 4-1 and defeated the Rio Hondo Prep from Southern California to win the championship game. Their only loss was to Bishop in their third game of the tournament. The young Serpents redeemed themselves the next day as they handled Bishop easily to get into the final game against Rio Hondo. They also beat Lee Vining and Lone Pine. The varsity boys opened the tournament up against the tough Bishop team who were undefeated in the Serpent Classic. The Broncos took advantage of early turnovers and a stagnant Serpent offense to coast to a 57-44 win. The boys took on Big Pine the next days as the Serpents got back on track with a 75-41 victory. Robert McFalls had 22 points; Andre Davis had 16; Victor Montoya had 14 and Taylen Wachsmuth added 10. In an evening game, Rio Hondo beat Bishop by one, 53-52, which lead to a semi-final match-up of MCHS versus Bishop and Antelope Valley versus Rio Hondo. Antelope Valley beat Rio Hondo by 32 to advance. Bishop looked like they were going to run the Serpents out of the gym as they hit six three-pointers in the first quarter and led 22-10. Serpents pull into tie for first place after wins

The Mineral County High boys basketball team won both conference games over the weekend to move into a tie with Whittell for the top spot in the conference. The Serpents put together a strong second half to beat Sierra Lutheran at home Friday 62-36 after only leading 30-23 at the break. Mineral County upped the defense in the third quarter holding Sierra Lutheran scoreless and adding 17 of their own for a commanding 47-23 lead. Taylen Wachsmith had another double-double game, 24 points and 13 rebounds. Robert McFalls had 14 points, Andre Davis had nine points with six assists and Alfonso Trujillo added nine points. Brandon West contributed with six rebounds and five assists. On Saturday, the team went to Coleville and won easily 64-17. The Serpents set the tone early in the first quarter when they ran past the Wolves 29-2. The bench emptied and everyone got solid playing time. Isaiah Crowl led the Serpents with 21 points and Eddie Dunnett poured in 10. Davis also scored 10 points accompanied by six assists while Wachsmith finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds for his third double-double in three conference games. Hawthorne Rockets win titles

The 7th and 8th grade Rocket teams won their respective titles for the fifth straight year. The 7th grade defeated Smith Valley 35-19 to nail down their championship. Preston Jaramillo scored eight points; Glenn Reeves and Nathaniel Montoya had six points each. Julio Alverez and Joe Davis each added four points.
