Serpents Lead Conference with Two Games Remaining

Submitted by Pete Summerbell The Mineral County boys won two more games last week and are in position to get the top seed in the upcoming regional playoffs. Friday night was senior night as Coleville was welcomed into the Snake Pit, and the Serpents downed the Wolverines 68-35. Mineral County started their three seniors, Vic Montoya, Austin Tweedy and Joseph Bandoni. The trio along with Robert McFalls and Tony Dominguez led the Serpents to an 18-13 first quarter lead. McFalls led all scorers with 24 points. Montoya and Seth Bozzi had 10 points each and Dominguez added nine. On Saturday, the Serpents and many Hawthornites traveled to Carson City to face Sierra Lutheran in an important conference matchup. At halftime, the Serpents held a slim lead 28-23, but outscored the Falcons 24-12 in the third quarter for a 17 point lead. The final score was 64-48 and left the Serpents comfortably on top of the Western Conference at 13-1, 19-5 overall. McFalls led the Serpents with 24 points and Bozzi had 10. Montoya added nine points and Devon Davis finished with eight. The Serpetns go into the final weekend of conference play in a Friday night matchup at home against Virginia City and then will travel to Smith Valley on Saturday. First-Place Serpents Notch Two More Wins on the Road

Friday night the Mineral County High boys basketball team traveled to South Lake Tahoe to take on the Warriors as both teams were tied for the conference lead at 10-1. The Serpents got off to a good start as they used a full court press against Whittell and ended up 23-12 at the end of the first period. Serpents Top Muckers, Bulldogs

The Serpents traveled to Virginia City Friday night to battle an improved Mucker team. Always a tough place to play, the Serpents came out on top 63-56. Seth Bozzi led the attack with 19 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. Damien Montoya had 16 points, four assists and four steals while Traven Wachsmuth added eight points and seven rebounds. On Saturday, the Serpents were home against Smith Valley. The Mineral County boys toppled the Bulldogs 78-34 as all 12 Serpents were in the scoring column. Vic Montoya had 14 points, Ethan Nelms had 13 points. Wachsmuth finihsed with 12 points, Alex Palacious added 10 and Austin Tweedy had eight points. Alex Palacious had nine assists and six steals. Robert McFalls finished with seven points, five assists and four steals in two quarters. The two wins gave the boys a 7-1 conference record and they are tied at the top of the conference with Whittell, 8-1. Mineral County will travel to Whittell Friday night and will look to avenge its only conference loss and take sole possession of 1st place. Serpents Come from Behind Late to Stun Sierra Lutheran

The Mineal County boys handed the visiting Sierra Lutheran squad its first conference loss in an exciting game on Saturday. The final score was 62-60. The Serpents were down 60-55 with 25 seconds left in the game when Vic Montoya hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 60-58. As the ball went through the net, Mineral County called its final time out to freeze the clock with 17 seconds left. The Serpents put full court pressure which caused an errant pass, a steal and a missed lay-up by the Falcons which resulted in a scramble for the ball that the Serpents came up with. Robert McFalls went on to make a floater in the lane to tie the game 60-60 with eight seconds to go. The Falcons then entered the ball and a pass down the sideline was intercepted by the Serpents, and a quick pass was made to Seth Bozzi under the basket who made the winning shot with two seconds as time ran out. Wow – seven points in 25 seconds to win the game. McFalls led the Serpents with 21 points and 11 rebounds and four assists in the win. Bozzi had 17 points, eight rebounds and fourblocks. Serpents Roll past Lakers

The Mineral County High boys basketball team sent the rest of the conference a strong message as they rolled over Pyramid Lake 77-45 in its conference opener. The Serpents led 30-18 at the intermission and the defense took over in the third quarter. They held the visiting team to four points while the offense exploded for 26 points, giving the boys a 56-22 point lead. The bench crew took over in the fourth quarter, led by junior Jared Dore who had 17 points and 13 rebounds (7 offensive for points). Damien Montoya had a great all-around game with 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and eight steals. Devon Davis had 13 points, Tony Dominguez had nine points and sophomore Seth Bozzi pulled down 11 rebounds. All twelve Serpents saw plenty of action and all contributed.
