Letter to the Editor: Jan. 16, 2014

Dear Editor, First off, I would like to welcome the new Sheriff Mr. Handte to Mineral County. He has quite a chore ahead of him but the right person can get it done. As far as I’m concerned the position had to be filled by someone from out of town. Good luck, Sheriff Handte. A note to the commissioners, when you wrote or changed the ordinance on blight in Mineral County, which became law on July 1, if I’m not mistaken. I know at least ten forms that have been filled out, signed with pictures of the properties. Six months have passed and as far as I can see, there has been nothing done. At this rate, Mineral County will never get cleaned up. As I have been told by a few people, this is more B.S. by the Commissioners and that nothing will be done as always. Is it too much to ask of the commissioners to put a note in the paper about the progress? As a few people stated at the last meeting at the Convention Center, the general public is left in the dark and as far as a recall rumor, that’s too nice of a word. Swarm of earthquakes strike northeast of Hawthorne

Dozens of tremors have struck in the Hawthorne area since Monday. The tremors started on Jan. 12 shortly before midnight and, as of press time on Tuesday, 35 minor tremors had rocked the desert outside the town, data from the Nevada Seismological Laboratory show. The quakes range in intensity from a .02 tremor, which happened on Jan. 13 shortly after 7 a.m., to a 3.8 magnitude quake that was felt throughout Hawthorne on Jan. 13 at 10:10 p.m. The shaking is generally light, the data show most quakes around a 1.5 magnitude, and the majority seem to be centered about 10 miles to the northeast of Hawthorne. The Mineral County Sheriff’s Department has not taken any reports of damage or injury related to the quakes....

JoAnn Jackson God called His faithful servant JoAnn Jackson into His rest on January 5, 2014; at Renown Hospital in Reno. She was 59, born February 1, 1954 in Ogden, Utah. She graduated from Mineral County High in 1972. After high school, JoAnn worked in various areas of employment while continuing to reside in Hawthorne. At the time of her death, she was Executive Director of Consolidated Agencies of Human Services – CAHS; and recently was recognized for 10 years work in this agency. Douglas Melvin Gutsche Douglas Melvin Gutsche, 67 of Hawthorne, passed away peacefully on Jan. 1. He was born in Stockton, Calif. on April 20, 1946 to his parents Melvin and Audrey Gutsche. Douglas graduated from Lincoln High School in Stockton in 1964. After high school, he attended Delta College for two years. He then went to the Naval Academy during the Vietnam Era for 12 years working in a submarine as a chef overseas. After coming home, he pursued truck driving in Heffington Freight for five years.
