Please keep trash out of recycling

On Aug. 13 the sacks of aluminum cans that people have been bringing me were taken to Sims Metal Management in Reno by Hawthorne Utilities as part of the county’s support of Armed Forces Day and brought $756 into the flyover account for the Armed Forces Day parade flyover pilots’ fuel. That was super great.

However, there was a huge problem. Hawthorne Utilities has graciously taken them to Reno in a roll-off container and when they opened the bags to dump in the bin they found trash and garbage and even had to jump into the bin to remove anything that wasn’t just the cans. Bert Crawford and I had tried to check the bags, but just couldn’t get them all done. To expect Bert and me to go through each bag and for the Utilities guys to deal with garbage at the recycle business is unacceptable.

We are willing to give it one more try, but if any garbage shows up in the bags I will stop the program and sadly, that hurts Armed Forces Day and puts more cans in our dump.

We ask that people keep bringing their cans to us for recycling, but please only aluminum cans and nothing else in the bags. If you can’t do that, please don’t bring anything. Clear bags will be greatly appreciated.

They can be dropped off at the airport building by the parking lot door, at 901 I Street, in front of the barn with numbers 20, 21, 22 at the corral or call me at 945-9286 and we will come pick them up.
