At his request, no services will be held for Carl Patrick Cruikshank, age70, of Luning, who passed away on Friday, Aug. 10 at Mount Grant General Hospital in Hawthorne after a short illness.

Carl was born in Tillamook, Ore. on Jan. 6, 1948, one of eight children, to Eric and Doris Cruikshank. He spent most of his early life in the commercial fishing industry in Oregon and Alaska, at one time building his own fishing boat, called the “Cape Mears”. Most of his later adult life took Carl all over the United States on amazing adventures. He bicycled and walked all over the west coast, walked, rode and packed his team of mules and built his own wagon and traveled by team and wagon from Nevada to Kansas. He came back through Colorado and Idaho and finished his travels in Oregon. One of the things that he had dreamed of doing was traveling down the Mississippi River, which he accomplished on his own homebuilt craft with oars and a small sail.

Of all the things that could be said of Carl, he was first and foremost an adventurer and a loyal friend and he will be deeply missed by family and friends.

He leaves behind a son: Carl Cruikshank Jr., of Craig, Alaska and brothers: Dan, Eric, Jerry, Fred and John and sisters: Doris and Colleen, all of Oregon. Arrangements are under the direction of Gunter’s Funeral Home in Hawthorne.
