Nona Lee Baker passed away in her sleep on Tuesday morning, March 13, 2018. She waas at home with her daughter, under Hospice care, after hip replacement surgery and residual encephalopathy. She was 91.

Nona, a retired Hawthorne classroom teacher, was born in Sacramento and was raised on a farm in Gridley, Calif. She attended high school in San Francisco and after receiving a scholarship to UNR for classic voice training; she graduated in 1946 and returned later for her education certificate.

Nona married Richard Baker in 1950 and moved to Mineral County. After a short time in Mina, they settled in Hawthorne, where they lived until moving to Reno in the 1970’s.

Nona, active in NEA and teacher’s union functions, taught music, elementary and junior high classes. She, ‘Mrs. Baker’, always loved seeing her past students and hearing how they were navigating their lives.

The cremation is being facilitated by Truckee Meadows Cremation & Burial Services in Reno. Nona requested that her ashes be buried with her mother in the Hawthorne cemetery. A memorial will be held in Reno later in the spring.
