Crews reinstall the repaired Hawthorne sign that fell during a spring storm in March.

A Christmas wish was granted to many Hawthorne residents as the iconic Hawthorne sign was reinstalled at Veteran’s Park last week.

The sign was a landmark on the corner of 5th and Sierra Way for many years before the old Hawthorne Club was demolished in 1966.

Knowing that the sign was significant to many residents, Rocky McKellip instrumented saving the relic and installing it at the end of then Ladybird Park where the lit sign met both visitors and residents on the outskirts of town in December of 1996.

After its fall on Friday, March 24, local sign shop owner, Wade Barton went about saving the sign and trying to restore the beacon.

The sign was insured through the county’s insurance.
