The Mineral County High football team did something against Whittell that no other team has been able to do this season – score. Unfortunately for the Serpents, their opponents did the same.

In a highly anticipated conference matchup in Zephyr Cove Friday night, Whittell reached the century mark in points and defeated Mineral County 104-58.

The game was somewhat tight in the first half as the teams traded touchdowns. The Warriors took a 60-44 lead into the locker room and kept their foot on the gas when they came out. The home team outscored the Serpents by 30 in the second half, 44-14, and cruised to a win that was dominated by their running game.

Whittell rushed for astounding 775 yards in the game and had three players with over 200 yards on the ground and a combined 12 touchdowns.

Not to be lost in the defeat, the Serpents hung 58 points on a Warrior defense that had only allowed a total of 38 points before the game all season long. The win for Whittell sets up an intriguing matchup of undefeated teams Saturday when they take on Virginia City in a battle for first place.

Mineral County (5-2, 3-2) is now tied for third place in the 1A Northern West conference with Smith Valley. The Serpents travel to Excel Christian tomorrow before finishing out the regular season with Coleville on Oct. 28.
