Clara was born July 14, 1938 in Schurz and passed away on July 1, 2017 at Northern Nevada Hospital in Sparks. Most of her life was spent in Schurz on the Walker River Indian Reservation where she was a member. She attended schools in Schurz, Yerington and at Stewart Indian School. She married Kenny Castillo and together they raised five children. After her first four children attended school, she returned to school and became certified as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1968 at the Lyon County Health Center and worked a short time at Mount Grant Hospital in Hawthorne.
Clara was a woman of many talents. She loved to sew, quilt, work outdoors in the garden and in the field. She grew up farming and ranching and it became a part of who she was. She was a wonderful cook and could make the most of whatever was available. She loved to dance whether it was rock and roll or participating with the Walker River Native dancers. Her strong connection to her Paiute traditions and culture were very evident when she was recognized as a Master Basket Weaver by the Nevada Arts Council for her beaded basketry and cradleboard work.
She is survived by children: Maxine (Gerry) Emm, Kenneth (Pam) Castillo, Jr., Yvonne (Al) French and Galen (Michelle) Castillo, including many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and extended family members.
Her husband, Kenny Castillo; son, Michael Castillo; brother, Carl Sam, Sr.; sister, Lucille Tom and parents: Clyde and Frances Sam preceded her in death.
A viewing was held at the Smith Family Funeral Home in Fallon on Thursday, July 6, 2017 between 5 and 7 p.m. and a graveside service was held at the Schurz Cemetery on Sunday, July 9 at 10 a.m.
Clara loved her family and worked very hard to provide for their many needs. She was a major strength for her family and we will all miss her love and support.
