Over 32 years has passed since the Mineral County High School wrestling team took to a mat, but after three years of discussion and planning it has now emerged with a first year participation of three coaches and five wrestlers.

John Gavin, the Mineral County High School counselor, was himself a wrestler through the 1980’s and a coach at the early age of 22. Gavin remained involved in the sport over many years, retaining a vision for the program to grow within our own local athletic environment. Two other staff members, Will Keady and Palmer Hagen, who had also wrestled in high school, joined in the coaching endeavor by introducing wrestling back into the high school programs.

A financial system of donations came forth to purchase costly, used equipment and mats which Gavin located by contacting resources throughout Nevada and Utah. Curtis Isom, from the local Farmers Insurance office, volunteered his truck, time and travel expenses to travel to Utah for the pickup and delivery of these necessary items.

With the initial requirements obtained, the Mineral County High School wrestling team joined the Nevada high school’s 1A – 2A Northern Division, which includes locations such as Tonopah, Eureka, Yerington, Battle Mountain, Lovelock and others. The current team includes, David Dittmer, Eddie Dunnet, Payton Isom, Kyler Muscleman and Anthony Ramirez, all of which have won at least one match, with Ramirez placing in the top three.

Due to this first year effort, no home meets will be accommodated and eligible wrestlers are between the grades of 9-12. Physicals and health clearances remain in place for this program, as well as parental or guardianship paperwork. This wrestling program still welcomes any financial support from the community to cover tournament fees, additional equipment and uniforms, travel expenses and general costs associated with a new program.

Please contact Gavin through the high school office for further information, earmarked donations or scheduled wrestling dates.
