The Hawthorne Convention Center played host to the a farewell gala for former depot commander Lt. Col. Gregory Gibbons June 29.

Nearly 200 guests enjoyed the SOC Nevada sponsored Rehearsal Dinner and Farewell Gala on June 29. Convention Center Manager Michael McNeill assisted dinner organizers in making arrangements for a last-minute change of venue. General Manager of the El Capitan Glenn Carns also worked quickly to enlist extra employees to cater the “first ever” event which filled the former USO building to near capacity.

The vintage patriotic theme resulted in a beautifully decorated event. One observer noted that the Hawthorne Convention Center, “had never looked better.” The evening’s program began with local Mineral County High School Junior, Madeline Bennett, singing the Star Spangled Banner. The stunning singer set the tone for the evening which was filled with friendly farewells and welcomes to the outgoing and incoming commanders at the Hawthorne Army Ammunition Plant.

In addition to a presentation from the 911 Memorial Mt. Grant Challenge Committee, remembrances were offered by the local VFW Post Veteran’s Memorial Park, employees of SOC LLC and citizens of Mineral County.

The evening captured the essence of “America’s Patriotic Home” and was proclaimed a huge success due to the teamwork and collaboration of all involved. Many thanks to volunteers and employees who helped decorate the building, manicure the grounds, prepare and serve the food and who participated in the program. The dinner was one of many series of events expertly executed during the week: “You know why?” . . . “Because we’re awesome!” (This quote has been attributed to outgoing Commander LTC Gregory Gibbons.)
