Global Voice, a program of Community Chest, Inc. and Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties is coming to Hawthorne for their annual service exchange. A group of about 10-15 young adults and youth will be visiting the community and organizing a series of programs and events for all age groups. Don’t miss the chance to have fun, learn new things, and get to know others with similar interests as you—both in and outside our community.

The Mineral County Community Coalition is hosting them at the Armory—but they’ll be all over town doing service projects and programs. Here’s a sample of what is offered for you and your family—and for youth.

Monday and Tuesday at the Library- Families with young children 3- 5 years of age will have a chance to experience the COW Bus. This pre-K Classroom On Wheels has been operating in Storey and Lyon Counties for years and we will get a chance to taste what it’s like to go on board and play and learn for two mornings (9-11:30 a.m.) or two afternoons. (1-3:30 p.m.). Sign your child up today because space is limited to 10 children per session.

Along with the COW Bus, Global Voice Leaders will be offering outdoor games and activities for children 5-12 years of age. Others will be meeting with parents of the young children to share Parents As Teachers (PAT) activities that you can do with your child at home or as a playgroup with the group of children throughout the summer. Just show up and get involved.

Wednesday at the Armory- This is the Youth Leadership and Activities Day for up to 50 middle and high school youth. There are youth coming in from Fernley in Lyon County (10-15) and from Tonopah (10-15) so we have about 10 to 15 spaces for Hawthorne youth. The day will start at 10 a.m. at the Armory and will run through 4 p.m. Global Voice Leaders will offer a variety of team-building, outdoor and leadership activities and workshops along with lots of fun icebreakers designed for you to explore what your leadership style is and what you’re really passionate about. Lunch will be served so don’t miss this event.

Thursday at the Pool House- Global Voice Leader, Shannon is a muralist and artist. She will have prepared the pool house so that the Hawthorne youth can put their signature on it and help create a community mural that will beautify and inspire you throughout the summer months. They’ll be there at 9 a.m. and throughout the day. Later in the day, youth from the Youth Leadership and Activities Day will get together to plan their presentations at the Culminating Ceremony set for Friday afternoon.

Flexible Friday- This day is left to finish the mural and perhaps learn more about the community—get involved in another project that is of priority to the group, or spend time in a community clean-up—anyone can join in the fun and satisfaction of making community a better place. The day culminates with a community Barbeque back at the Pool where everyone will enjoy the presentations and final sharing of our week together—Global Voice and you.
