Mineral County dispatch received a call of a possible suicide with a firearm between 5:30 and 6 p.m. on May 6.

“We arrived on the scene at the residence on Spanish Springs Rd. and found the subject inside his vehicle with a single gunshot wound to the head,” said Mineral County Sheriff Stewart Handte.

“The sad thing is, he was a very young man, well-liked and respected in town, He had a lot of friends. I mentioned to a few people that no one has the right answer to why things like this happen,” Handte added.

“The bottom line is that we have to do our part, initiate the investigation, go through all the proper channels and submit a report to the district attorney’s office. The case is still under investigation, and we’re going to talk to a few more people,” Handte said.

The sheriff also said he hopes to have the case wrapped up in a short period of time. The subject did not leave a note. The sheriff did not have a specific time frame for the conclusion of the investigation.

“This is the second of these scenarios I’ve dealt with since I’ve been here. It’s unsettling and there’s no way to describe how his friends and family are feeling,” Handte said.

“This is a tragedy of epic proportions for a small community such as this. People need to come together as a group and be there for each other. Our department sends out its thoughts and condolences to the young man’s family,”Handte concluded.
