Allecia Wingfield, Eighth Grade Graduate Krystal Spriggs, and Mellissa Spriggs received a $300 check from SOC Nevada LLC for the eighth grade Class of 2018 promotional ceremony on May 29.

Recently, the seventh and eighth grade students at Mineral County High School were informed they were not going to have a graduation ceremony since they are now located in the High School and that the sixth graders would be promoted instead.  Not having an eighth grade graduation and knowing what the potential impact on the students could mean, some of the community members took action and decided to hold a graduation ceremony for them.

SOC Nevada LLC has contributed $300 towards the ceremony which is being coordinated by a group of well-meaning individuals and parents.  These individuals have expressed their belief that a Graduation is a life changing event with the potential to profoundly impact the graduate’s life in a very beneficial and positive way.  It was noted that often, a graduation can be a transitional stepping stone into another arena with more opportunities and responsibilities such as graduating from eighth grade to enter high school. In our society and particularly in our community, it has long been understood and celebrated that when a student enters into their freshmen year it is a coming of age event. This transition signals to the student the huge accomplishment they made through childhood learning and early teenage years. It lets them know they are now ready to enter into an advanced level of education and by virtue of their graduation and promotional ceremony they have the skills to be successful.

SOC’s donation will help assure that this year’s promotion ceremony is memorable for the students who have reached this important milestone and exhibits the company’s commitment to continuing higher education for all.

Mellissa Spriggs and Allecia Wingfield have planned the eighth graduation for the Class of 2018 to be held on May 29 at the YCAC from 6-9 pm.  They have an account set-up at Financial Horizons Credit Union, checks can be made payable to MC Class of 2018.  For information on how to help please contact Mellissa Spriggs at (775) 316-2375 or email at mightymelissa@yahoo.com, or Allecia Wingfield at (775) 316-1882 or email at lousbear@yahoo.com.
